The Surfer's
Grid. 🏄

Munich is 500km from the nearest ocean, yet it has a thriving surf culture. This is the modern, engineered side of the city.

Englischer Garten

The Ice Brook. 🌊

The Eisbachwelle is a man-made accident turned legend. A standing wave created by concrete blocks in the river channel.

Experts Only

Do not attempt this unless you are a pro. The water is shallow, freezing, and full of concrete. The locals are territorial for safety reasons. Watching from the bridge is the best (and driest) experience.

24/7 Action

It doesn't matter if it's 3 AM or if it's snowing. There is almost always someone in a thick wetsuit riding the wave. It is the beating heart of modern Munich.

The Motor City. 🏎️

Bayerische Motoren Werke. Munich is a car town. The BMW Welt (World) and Museum are architectural masterpieces located next to the Olympic Park.

The Architecture

The building looks like a tornado of glass and steel. It is free to enter. It is a delivery center where buyers watch their new cars rotate on turntables before driving them out.

The Museum

Across the bridge is the "Salad Bowl" (the museum building). It houses the history of the brand, from aircraft engines to Formula 1.

Rent a Dream

You can rent current M-series models by the hour from here ("BMW on Demand"). Drive one onto the Autobahn for the ultimate souvenir.

The Spider Web

Behnisch & Otto

The Acrylic Tent. ⛺

Built for the 1972 games, the roof structure was revolutionary. It drapes over the stadium, pool, and hall like a transparent spider web.

The Roof Climb:

You can actually walk *on* the roof. Guided tours take you along the edge of the acrylic panels, complete with a zipline (Flying Fox) across the stadium arena.

Flaucher

The Urban Beach. ⛱️

The Isar river runs through the city. It was renaturalized, meaning the concrete banks were removed to create gravel beaches and islands.

Grilling Zone

In the "Flaucher" area, grilling is legal and popular. On a warm evening, the air is thick with the smell of charcoal and the sound of crates of beer clinking.

Drifting

Locals jump in upstream and let the current carry them down to the center. It is the lazy river ride of nature. The water comes from the Alps, so it is fresh (and cold).
